The Hierarchy of Healing: Why the Nervous System Must Come First

Blog

When most people think about health, they focus on the symptoms they can see.

Maybe it’s anxiety. Difficulty focusing. Behavioral challenges. Digestive issues. Poor sleep. Emotional outbursts. Brain fog. Chronic stress.

What many don’t realize is that these challenges often aren’t the starting point of the problem—they’re the final expression of a deeper neurological imbalance.

At Hope Chiropractic, we often explain this through what we call the Hierarchy of Healing.

Just like a house needs a strong foundation before you can build the roof, the body needs a strong neurological foundation before higher-level functions can fully thrive.

The Foundation: The Autonomic Nervous System

At the base of the pyramid is the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).

This is the system responsible for the functions we don’t consciously control:

  • Sleep
  • Breathing
  • Heart rate
  • Digestion
  • Immune function
  • Hormone regulation
  • Organ function
  • Stress adaptation

If this system is stuck in chronic stress mode, the body spends most of its energy trying to survive instead of heal and grow.

Many of the challenges we see today can be traced back to stressors that impact this foundation, including:

  • Maternal stress during pregnancy
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Birth interventions
  • Early life stress

When the foundation becomes dysregulated, everything built on top of it becomes less stable.

The Neuro-Motor System: Movement Creates Development

The next layer is the Neuro-Motor System.

This system controls:

  • Movement
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Posture
  • Motor development

When the nervous system is under stress, movement patterns can become inefficient. Children may struggle with coordination, balance, posture, or developmental milestones.

Many families are surprised to learn that movement is not just physical—it provides critical information to the developing brain.

Stressors such as:

  • Breech positioning
  • Birth trauma
  • Falls
  • Repetitive injuries
  • Poor posture

can disrupt this level of development and place additional stress on the nervous system.

The Gut & Immune System: The Body’s Internal Environment

Above movement sits the Gut & Immune System.

This level affects:

  • Digestion
  • Absorption
  • Elimination
  • Immune responses
  • Inflammation regulation

Today, many children and adults are navigating challenges related to food sensitivities, digestive issues, chronic inflammation, and immune dysfunction.

While nutrition matters, the nervous system plays a significant role in regulating how effectively the digestive and immune systems function.

Environmental stressors such as:

  • Toxins
  • Chemicals
  • Food additives
  • Preservatives

can place additional burden on this level of the hierarchy.

The Brain-Based Functions: The Top of the Pyramid

At the top are the functions most people notice first:

  • Cognition
  • Learning
  • Focus
  • Emotions
  • Memory
  • Behavior
  • Speech
  • Social interaction

These are often the challenges that bring families into our office.

However, trying to improve these higher-level functions without first addressing the layers beneath them can be like trying to build the second floor of a house before pouring the foundation.

When the nervous system is overwhelmed by stress, the brain naturally shifts resources toward survival rather than growth, learning, emotional regulation, and connection.

Why This Matters

This is why many parents become frustrated when they focus solely on behavior, emotions, attention, or learning challenges.

They’re trying to solve a top-of-the-pyramid problem without first addressing what may be happening underneath.

The body heals from the bottom up.

When the autonomic nervous system becomes more regulated, movement improves. When movement improves, the brain receives better information. When the brain receives better information, digestion, immunity, emotional regulation, behavior, and cognition often begin to improve as well.

Healing Is About Building a Strong Foundation

At Hope Chiropractic, our goal is not simply to chase symptoms.

Our goal is to help the nervous system become more adaptable, regulated, and resilient so the body can function the way it was designed to.

When we focus on the foundation first, the higher levels of health often begin to change naturally.

Because true healing doesn’t start at the top of the pyramid.

It starts at the foundation.
